The growing concern over adolescent parenting, characterised by absentee parenting, quest for career development, economic pressure and children's exposure to societal vices, necessitates a deeper understanding of a community-based parenting approach. This paper assesses the expected and performed roles in communal parenting of adolescents in Ife South Local Government Area (LGA), Osun State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select 160 and 12 respondents, subjected to a structured interview schedule and key informant interviews, respectively. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results show that most (79.51% and 81.81%) males and females were aged 46 years and above and literate. Several expected communal parenting roles and attributes were identified, but their preferred strategies and performed roles varied by gender. Also, a significant difference (p≤0.05) existed between expected and performed roles. It was concluded that leveraging the numerous communal parenting attributes and preferred strategies is imperative in any planned initiative to mitigate the challenges of adolescent parenting in rural communities.
